Improving a Tooth’s Cosmetic Appearance By Installing a Crown

Posted .

Past dental work, deep stains and chips on one of the teeth in your smile, can leave you feeling self-conscious. This prompts some people to have Oxford Lakes Dental Care restore the enamel layer of the tooth by installing a crown.

A crown essentially replaces the enamel layer with an artificial material. While crowns can also be made from gold alloys and base metals, in most situations a tooth in your smile will call for using porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. Since the porcelain material can be shaded, it will look just like a natural tooth.

During the first appointment Oxford Lakes Dental Care will inspect the tooth, to make sure there aren’t any tooth decay issues. This might also include a few X-rays to assess the depth of the available enamel layer.

Your dentist will then form an abutment by removing the majority of the enamel layer. This leaves behind a small amount to protect the interior of the tooth. This abutment, will later serve to anchor your permanent crown in place.

At the end of the first appointment, Oxford Lakes Dental Care will take an impression of the abutment, and the surrounding teeth. This will be sent to a dental lab, that makes your new crown. A temporary crown is placed over the abutment to keep it safe, while you wait for the dental lab to complete your new crown.

Once the dental lab has finished your new crown, Oxford Lakes Dental Care will call you in for a brief follow up appointment. The temporary crown is removed and your new permanent crown is cemented in place.
